Research Facilities
RESEARCH FACILITIES
Geophysical Laboratory
The Geophysical Laboratory has computational facilities as well as Geophysical equipment such as Resistivity meter for probing shallow depths, Gravimeter, Magnetometer, Very low Frequency (VLF), and Terrameter for resistivity imaging.
Rock Crushing Facility
The facility includes Disc Mill, Planetary Ball Mill and Jaw Crusher for fine powdering of rock samples.
Petrology Lab
The petrology lab is equipped with Advanced Polarising Microscopes and Polarising Research Microscopes for Thin Section Studies.
Paleobiology and Economic Geology Lab
Paleobiology and Economic Geology Lab has a rich collection of fossils and important specimens of ore forming rocks and minerals.
Sedimentology Lab
Sedimentology lab is equipped with Sterozoom Microscope, Laser Particle size Analyser for sedimentary geological studies.
Geochemistry lab
The Geochemical Laboratory is equipped with instruments for geological and geochemical rock sample preparation:
- Soxhlet extraction units for sedimentary organic matter, purification and isolation of biomarkers from rocks/sediments
- Microwave (MILESTONE ETHOS UP) assisted acid dissolution of rock samples for trace and rare earth element analysis
Minor equipments for geochemical sample preparation include Centrifuge, Hot Plates Hot Water Bath, Sonicator, Vortex mixer, Double distillation unit for lab water, fumehoods etc.
Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) Lab
The Inductively Coupled Plasma Emission Mass Spectrometry (ICPMS) laboratory is equipped with a Perkin Elmer DRC-e model ICP-MS with dynamic reaction cell for ultra-trace detection of Trace and Rare Earth Elements in rocks, sediments, soils, water matrices.
Aerosol Physics Lab
Aerosol physics laboratory equipped with i) Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer (SMPS) to measure aerosol size distribution in the size range from 10 nanometer to 1 micrometer and ii) Nano Condensation Nucleus Counter (NCNC) to measure aerosol size distribution in the size range from 1 to 4 nanometer. Observations of ambient aerosols are conducted routinely to to develop the process-level understanding of aerosol nucleation and growth processes. We also harmonize aerosol, cloud, radiation, rainfall etc. data products from satellite (INSAT-3D, MODIS, MISR, CLOUDSAT, CALIPSO, CERES, OMI, MOPITT etc.) and model reanalysis (ERA-Interim, MERRA-2, NCEP-NCAR, GDAS etc.) to addresses various intriguing questions related to aerosol-cloud interactions and climate.
Remote Sensing lab
Remote sensing laboratory equipped with 12 Dekstop computers with Geographic Information System (GIS) based tools to capture, store, manipulate, analyze, manage, and present all types of geographical data. GIS has applications in various fields like industry, agriculture, disaster management, energy and environmental monitoring.
Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences
Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences laboratory is specifically developed to give practical acquaintance in various aspects of ocean-atmosphere system to MSc students. It is equipped with 10 Desktop computers with Windows and LINUX based platforms and various ocean and atmospheric sciences related tools and computational facilities.
The Centre for Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences (CEOAS), University of Hyderabad hosts well equipped geological, geochemical, geophysical, ocean and atmospheric sciences laboratories which are utilized by the students and faculty of the Centre and outside researchers.
